Description: The Barred owl is a largish brown and white owl with a rounded head and no ear tufts. Like all owls, females are bigger on average than males. They have a distinct gray facial disc. The upper body is greyish-brown with lateral barring on the head, neck, tail and flight feathers. The underside is white with a vertically barred breast and spotted abdomen. It has blackish eyes and a yellowish bill.

   Weight: 468 - 1051 g

Distribution and status: The Barred Owl is an uncommon to rare owl but may be found year round throughout much of the boreal and montain areas of Alberta.

Habitat:

Diet: The Barred Owl hunts mainly for mice, voles, squirrels, hares and shrews. They also will feed on amphibians and reptiles on occasion. They frequently hunt during the day.

Intersting Notes: The Barred Owl is perhaps the most vocal owl in the province. Even if not seen, the distinguishing “Who-cooks-for-you” call sets the Barred Owl apart from all other owl species. This unique call gives the Barred Owl the nickname of “Hoot Owl”. The call may be heard in the hours after sunset and before sunrise.

Similar Species: Similar colouration to the Great Grey Owl, but is much smaller and has dark eyes.
